Holocaust Memorial Day marked by a performance of Shoah at Buckfast Abbey

Shoah, a Hebrew word meaning ‘catastrophe’ or ‘devastation’, is the word used to describe the Holocaust when six million European Jews and millions of others were murdered by the Nazis during the Second World War. It is also the title of a work by Devon composer, Philip Arkwright, former Organist & Master of the Music at Buckfast Abbey, that will be performed by South Devon choir, Brent Singers, on Saturday 28 January 2023 to commemorate Holocaust Memorial Day. This is marked annually on 27 January as the day when the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp was liberated. The performance will take place at Buckfast Abbey at 7.30pm under the direction of Matthew Searles, with Philip himself accompanying the work on the Abbey’s Ruffatti organ. Tickets are available from www.buckfast.org.uk/boxoffice and 75% of the proceeds will be donated to the Holocaust Educational Trust. A two-course pre-concert meal is available in the Abbey’s Conference Centre dining room at 17:45.
